One of Our Pre-Earthwatch Tours

Posted by Yvonne on June 21

Holly made arrangements with Swiss Tours through our hotel (Gran Hotel Costa Rica) for tours of the City of San Jose, a volcano, and a rainforest. Based on some paperwork that she e-mailed, it looks like we will be visiting Turu Ba Ri. Check out the website for some thrilling videos of zipline action!!

A little about the Expedition

Posted by Yvonne Weinstein on June 16

Just in case you were wondering about the purpose of the trip:

“Costa Rican Coffee From Community to Cup” aims to help increase sustainable coffee farming practices in the TarrazĂș region of Costa Rica , with the ability to be replicated in other farms and coffee regions. Volunteers will use GIS tools to improve understandings of relationships of soil conditions, coffee, plant cover shade, slope, aspect, erosion, water courses, nutrient cycling and farming practices. Also, this project will examine how fertilizer and shade tree management relate to coffee production, environmental sustainability and certification criteria.

Getting Ready to Go; Setting up this Blog

Posted by Yvonne Weinstein on June 14
Yes, I am doing both of these things. The blog is to be used by any team member who desires to post either words or photos before or during the expedition. From the introductory e-mails that we sent, our team is comprised of members from across the US; it will be fun getting to know each other in the field. (Members, feel free to post an introductory statement here on the blog :) ).

Four team members have decided to meet early and do some sight-seeing for three days before the official Earthwatch Expedition begins.
